During Spring Festival, Xishi reunion pancakes from Zhuji, Zhejiang province, have seen a surge in popularity, with the Xishi Xiaodian workshop buzzing with orders. This traditional Shaoxing delicacy has become a must-have dish for family reunions and festive celebrations.
Originally known as "radish thread pancakes" or "silver thread pancakes", Xishi reunion pancakes are made by wrapping shredded radish and other fillings in the dough, then lightly pan-frying them to achieve a crispy, fragrant texture. The dish is closely tied to Xishi, one of ancient China's renowned beauties. Missing her hometown, Xishi made these pancakes and sent them to her grandparents, symbolizing her longing and familial love.
Due to their symbolic meaning of "reunion", these pancakes hold a cherished place on New Year's Eve tables. In 2016, they were recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of Zhuji and have since won several provincial awards, solidifying their status as one of Zhejiang's most important rural delicacies.

With the rise of standardized production and online sales, Xishi reunion pancakes have expanded their reach beyond Zhuji, bringing this time-honored treat to homes across the country. This growing interest was further fueled by a local heritage event before Spring Festival, where more than 100 participants, including young returnees and children, gathered to learn the art of pancake making.
Zhou Ken, owner of the Xishi Xiaodian workshop, is pleased with the growing enthusiasm for the tradition, especially as more young apprentices join to carry on the tradition. "It is encouraging to see our heritage being embraced by the younger generation," Zhou said.
