Zhejiang establishes provincial research institute for yellow rice wine
The Zhejiang Traditional Shaoxing Yellow Wine Research Institute, the first provincial-level research platform dedicated to yellow rice wine in China, was officially inaugurated in Shaoxing on Aug 15.
The institute aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and industry needs, driving technological innovation and industrial upgrades in the yellow rice wine sector. Additionally, it will serve as a talent cultivation platform.
Yellow rice wine has long served as a bridge connecting Shaoxing with the world, earning global attention even during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). In 1915, Shaoxing's yellow rice wine won a gold medal at the Panama Pacific International Exposition.
With increasing international recognition, Shaoxing's yellow rice wine is expanding its presence in global markets.
In 2023, its export value reached 320 million yuan ($44.19 million), with an annual export volume of approximately 15,000 metric tons, making Shaoxing the largest exporter of yellow rice wine in China. By 2027, the annual sales revenue of the city's yellow rice wine industry is expected to reach 10 billion yuan.
In recent years, the city has prioritized the development of the yellow rice wine industry by enacting protective regulations and establishing a task force to promote its growth.
Shaoxing will leverage the establishment of the Zhejiang Traditional Shaoxing Yellow Wine Research Institute to explore the integration of traditional techniques with modern technology, said the municipal government authorities.
