Shaoxing's Zhuji: Beauty and pearls
Zhuji, a county-level city in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, is renowned for its beauty, embodied by the legendary Xi Shi and its exquisite pearls.
Xi Shi, one of the legendary four beauties of ancient China, was born in Zhuji during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), becoming a symbol of love and beauty in Chinese traditional culture. Her story was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2006.
Xi Shi Gu Li scenic area offers immersive experiences for visitors. The newly-introduced night tour connects various scenic spots, featuring dining, sightseeing, and entertainment.
Pearls are known locally as the "Tears of Xi Shi". The city has promoted the pearl industry through tours, integrating its cultural and tourism offerings. Zhuji is developing a distinctive town combining the pearl industry, specialty tourism, internet, and cultural creativity, while local enterprises are incorporating pearl elements into their products.
From May 20 to 22, Zhuji hosted the 2024 World Pearl Conference, attracting over 400,000 visitors.
