Shaoxing's specialties flourish in Central Asian markets
In recent years, trade between Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province and Central Asian countries has been rapidly expanding as improvements in customs supervision and clearance and logistics make it increasingly convenient.
The China Nuts and Roasted Seeds Industrial Park located in Zhuji is the largest of its kind in the city. One of the earliest companies to start operating in the park has successfully entered multiple overseas markets with its nut products.
Since 2023, the company has experienced a significant increase in the export of macadamia nuts to Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. "Our export volume has nearly tripled as the Belt and Road Initiative has provided us with more opportunities," said Jin Weijun, the company's general manager.
From January to May 2023, Shaoxing exported over 1,200 tons of macadamia nuts worth 48.65 million yuan ($6.81 million) to Central Asian countries, marking year-on-year increases of 291 percent and 311 percent, respectively.
Shaoxing tea has also gained recognition in Central Asia. In 2023, Shaoxing's tea exports to the five Central Asian countries experienced rapid growth, with Uzbekistan being the second-largest market. Statistics show that in the first five months of this year, Shaoxing companies exported about 6,100 tons of tea to the five Central Asian countries, with a value of nearly 78 million yuan, representing increases of 25 percent and 31 percent, respectively.
Shaoxing Customs has made every effort to facilitate swift customs clearance for food companies. According to an official, they have been focusing on accelerating inspection, sample testing, and certification issuance. The customs authorities have also aided food companies in improving their traceable food safety control systems.
