The highly anticipated original dance drama Xi Shi announced its grand premiere in Hangzhou on May 21.

The drama, based on the story of renowned Chinese beauty Xi Shi during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), will be jointly produced by Zhuji City Cultural Tourism Group and Hangzhou Hongyi Yingxiang Cultural Tourism Development Co.

Renowned dancer Yang Liping was appointed as the esteemed cultural and artistic consultant for Zhuji, the hometown of Xi Shi, lending an air of prestige to the event.

Embracing the opportunity, Yang expressed her love for Xi Shi, highlighting its youthful embodiment of the classical tale.

Wang Taorui, chief director of Xi Shi, shared his insights into the production's innovative approach, which distinguishes it from traditional dance dramas.

Wang emphasized its focus on expressing Eastern minimalist aesthetics. Both the choreography and set design discard conventional and rigid forms of beauty, merging Eastern elegance with modern minimalism. Character portrayals in Xi Shi delve into the depths of emotional expression, guiding the audience into the inner worlds of the characters.

From June 3 to 5, the premiere will grace the stage of the Hangzhou Grand Theater and then embark on a global tour.

Zhuji already brought the classic IP to life on stage last year. It held an immersive stage play titled Dreaming of Xi Shi, enchanting audiences within the Xi Shi Cultural Tourism Zone. The play has been performed 180 times and watched by 35,000 people.
