The Shaoxing Library celebrated the 120th anniversary of its founding on Dec 30, 2022.

A slew of activities such as a seminar on the development of the museum and an exhibition of ancient books and documents in Shaoxing were hosted to mark the milestone.

The library, formerly known as the Guyue Library, was built 120 years ago by Xu Shulan, an educator and scholar from the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912).

Today, the library is nationally recognized with modern facilities and a myriad of books and precious documents.

It has digitalized large amounts of ancient books and documents, and inscriptions on tablets make them available to readers.

Shaoxing has made persistent efforts to promote citywide reading. Last year, the city was honored by the Chinese Writers Association as a city of mass reading, with its reading frequency rate sitting at 91.71 percent, ranking second among cities in Zhejiang.
