Tongshanshao, a type of baijiu from Tongshan town, Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province, has become increasingly popular in the Chinese spirits market, local media reported on Feb 14.
At the recent Zhejiang Agricultural Fair, the spirit generated nearly 100,000 yuan ($15,740) in sales within a day.
Meanwhile, the same type of baijiu from the Yuezhuang Spirit Workshop took first place in a competition that was part of the online fair, becoming the only Tongshanshao in Zhuji, a county-level city in Shaoxing, to win an award.
The workshop was founded by Sun Ganping, who was born in Tongshan town. Tong returned his home and set up the workshop with the hope of bringing prosperity to the locals.
In late 2021, the Yuezhuang Spirit Culture Academy was founded near by the Yuezhuang Spirit Workshop.
The academy hosts various types of activities such as lectures, salons and art exhibitions to promote Chinese spirits.
Tongshan currently has 10 small- and medium-sized companies specializing in research and development of Tongshanshao. In 2021, Tongshan produced more than 5,000 tons of the spirit which was worth 600 million yuan.
