Indian expats from the Indian Neighborhood Community in Keqiao district, Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province, recently volunteered to donate blood in a local blood donation campaign, local media reported on Sept 24.
"My compatriots in this community started donating blood in groups in 2015," said an indian surnamed Mahesh. "About 100 Indians volunteered to donate blood to a Chinese girl suffering from leukemia. I was also one of them."
According to Mahesh, he has donated blood six times.
Mahesh added that the event has motivated more foreigners to join the blood donation campaign. According to statistics by a local media outlet, more than 600 expats in Shaoxing have donated over 250,000 milliliters of blood to date.
Zhong Xiaolei, an official at the Shaoxing Blood Center, said that there will be a surge in demand for rare blood types as the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 is around the corner.
Zhong noted that some blood types rarely found in Chinese are common among Indians. As such, more expats should come forward to help.
