Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang province has been developing itself into a popular choice for international sports events since the city proposed this target in 2018.
Apart from the host city Hangzhou, Shaoxing will host the largest number of events during the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
In 2019, Shaoxing hosted 21 international and 60 national sports events. In 2018, the city hosted 33 international and national sports events.
According to Wu Haiming, director of the municipal sports bureau, the per capita area of sports fields in Shaoxing is 2.63 square meters, the third highest among cities in Zhejiang.
Last August, Shaoxing was recognized as one of the 40 national pilot cities for sports consumption by the General Administration of Sport of China.
According to a 2020 report on sports consumption in Shaoxing, 82.73 percent of local residents purchased sports-related products and services over the past year, 23.03 percentage points higher than the provincial average.
Shaoxing has since 2019 set aside 20 million yuan ($3.09 million) every year to support the city's sports industry.
