Shaoxing celebrates 500th birthday of great scholar

Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang province will hold a series of activities to commemorate the 500th birthday of Xu Wei, a great scholar who was born in the city in 1521 and died in 1593.
Xu, who lived during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), was renowned as a scholar with various talents, including writing, painting, calligraphy, drama, and strategy.
Despite going through many ups and downs through his life, Xu lifted his arts to a new level. His works feature a combination of traditional elements and innovation.

In order to remember the scholar and carry forward traditional Chinese culture, Shaoxing will hold a series of activities including a forum and exhibitions over the next few months.
More than 300 top artists from across the country will gather at a national forum dedicated to commemorating the 500th birthday of Xu Wei from May 19 to May 21.
On May 19, the new Xu Wei Art Museum will open to the public, with a number of dignitaries invited to attend the opening ceremony. The new museum will help visitors learn more about the real life of Xu.
A lengthy exhibition, which will run from May 19 until Aug 19, will also be held by the Shaoxing government, along with the Palace Museum and other museums to showcase Xu's works.
