Shaoxing's chemical industry includes petrochemical and chemical products, plastics and other fields, mainly covering basic chemical raw materials, dyes (coatings), synthetic materials, specialty chemicals, chemicals for daily use and other subsectors.

Shaoxing leads the industry in a number of subsectors. Shangyu district is the world's largest dye series production base. The two leading enterprises (Zhejiang Longsheng Group and Zhejiang Runtu) account for 65 percent of the national dyestuff market share and about 35 percent of global market share.

The city has 338 chemical enterprises above the designated scale – with an annual sales revenue surpassing 20 million yuan ($2.85 million) – employing 51,700 people, with an annual output of 600,000 tons of dyes, an output value of 94.28 billion yuan and a profit of 9.17 billion yuan in 2018.

The city is home to eight listed companies in the sector: Zhejiang Longsheng Group, Zhejiang Haiyue, Zhejiang NHU, Sanlux, Zhejiang Great Southeast Corp, Zhejiang Runtu, Zhejiang Jinke Entertainment Culture, Zhejiang Yangfan New Materials, Zhejiang Huangma Technology and Zhejiang Zhongxin Fluorine Materials.
