Hangzhou, Quzhou combine to boost foreign trade shipping

To boost their foreign trade shipping logistics and competitiveness, Hangzhou and Quzhou in Zhejiang province have launched a pioneering cross-city partnership to streamline and bolster their waterway transport.

The new model, which integrates a credit whitelist with the prioritized passage of the locks, targets shipping companies in Quzhou with strong credit standing, significantly reducing the waiting times for ships to proceed through the locks.

Previously, ships could wait 5-7 days during peak periods. Now, with streamlined approvals and prioritized scheduling, shipments can pass through the locks after waiting only 24 hours, greatly enhancing efficiency.

The success of the model is underpinned by a smart management platform, which integrates real-time data on ship movements, hydrology, and meteorology. The platform enables dynamic coordination between Hangzhou and Quzhou, ensuring seamless communications between lock operators and unified overall scheduling.

"We no longer need to send applications to Hangzhou. Local approvals in Quzhou save us significant time, allowing us to meet international shipping schedules and reduce export pressures," said a representative from Quzhou Jiangju Shipping Co.

Additionally, Hangzhou ports are enhancing collaboration with Quzhou shipping firms, enhancing route layouts and cargo transshipment in the two regions. Drawing on successful regional foreign trade container shipping routes, the collaboration aims to boost the market appeal of shifting freight from road to water.
