The Ma'ao Museum in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has been rated as a provincial-level four-star rural museum, the Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau recently announced.
The museum, which opened to the public in 2001, is a one-of-a-kind institution in the province which showcases the 6000-year-old fishing culture on the Zhoushan islands.
The 2,100-suqare-meter museum has an exhibition area of 8 million square meters and more than 300 items.
The items mainly consist of cultural relics showcasing the formation of the Zhoushan islands and its evolution.
The museum also set up a temporary exhibition area, where a photo exhibition of Sanmao is being held from Nov 15 to Dec 14.
Sanmao was the pen name of the late Echo Chan, a Chinese contemporary novelist, writer and translator from Taiwan. Her ancestral residence, which was built by her grandfather, is located in Dinghai district. Sanmao is best known for her book Stories of the Sahara.
The museum has received more than 35,000 visitors and held more than 20 activities this year.
It is open from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, and 1:30 pm to 4:30 in winter, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm in summer from Tuesday to Monday.
