I was lucky enough to have got my second promotion, a genuine one, as a vice director of the investment promotion department. Despite my own number phobic, I spared no efforts in debriefing commercial statistics and figures in specific policies which in return redounded to my understanding and devotion of Zhoushan. What's more, I found a group of talented team-mates in several major international activities of tourism, marine culture festivals, petro-chemical and natural gas and aviation manufacturing. Dozens of foreign delegations arrived to attend individualized activities as keynote speeches, expert forums, technical pro-seminars, business visits and investigation. In the session of these big events, dozens of half-blood interpreters like me from all walks of life would be summoned and gathered by the head of the municipal foreign affairs office, together with their regular squad of 6 interpreters, to provide services including but not limited to translation, investment consultancy, tour guidance, conference assistance, traffic security, to make sure that those foreign guests be enchanted and enjoy their stay in Zhoushan so much as to forget to go home when the activities ended.

Thanks to those conferences, Zhoushan had become increasingly famous for her loveliness, hospitality, beautiful scenery, refreshed air and sky, improved infrastructure and convenient communities. More skilled language volunteers with solid professional background are recruited. The city is full of engineers of oil extraction and telecommunication, teachers of marine law and arts, attorneys dealing with economic dispute and other civil actions, agents of shipping and bulk commodities, doctors and police officers of general service, fathers trapped in the traffic jam when picking up their children in bilingual kindergarten, and mothers reviewing for the English test of professional title exam after bedding their children. We are ordinary people hidden in the city busy earning our livings, waiting to be found, providing advisory services along with interpretation when needed, writing and performing our own stories in Zhoushan.
