An agricultural enterprise research institute in Zhoushan was named in the list of research institutes to be built into provincial key ones in 2019, Science Technology Department of Zhejiang Province announced recently.

The Seafood Deep Processing Research Institute, attached to the China Aquatic Products Zhoushan Marine Fisheries Corporation in Putuo district, is the city's first agricultural enterprise research institute to have this honor.

As a leading agricultural enterprise in the province, the company has undertaken many important R&D projects at provincial and national levels, and has held more than 20 patents for its products and technologies.

It was the first in China to have produced finely-processed seafood through innovation, such as the roast fish fillet and shredded squid, contributing significantly to the nation's pelagic fishery development and deep-processing industry.

The research institute, supported by the provincial government, will help strengthen the R&D of the company and boost the local agricultural sector.

Zhoushan is well-developed in agriculture and fishery, with its Shenjiamen Fishing Port being the largest in China and among the top three in the world.

"Zhoushan is currently the nation's biggest pelagic fishery base, with fish output accounting for 90 percent and 25 percent of the province's total and the nation's total, respectively," said Lin Dewei, vice secretary of the city government at the 2018 Zhejiang Agricultural Fair held in late November.
