A national academic conference on oceanology and limnology was held on Nov 22 in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, to discuss the protection of oceans and lakes amid global changes.
The Oceans and Lakes under Global Change—Belt and Road Initiative and Eco-Civilization Construction, hosted by the Chinese Society for Oceanology and Limnology (CSOL), gathered more than 800 experts and scholars from 142 domestic research institutes, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
They delivered speeches on a series of ocean-related topics such as the development of an oceanic satellite constellation and an ocean eco-system, and held discussions on the protection of ocean resources at 15 sub-conferences.
The conference also saw the awarding ceremony of the 5th Zeng Chengkui Marine Technology Award, China's first technology award named after a marine scientist. Zeng Chengkui was one of the nation's pioneers in phycology studies.
Meanwhile, family members of the late Zhang Fusui, a renowned Chinese conchology expert, donated 1 million yuan ($144,000) to CSOL for establishing the "Zhang Fusui Conchology Award" to award the domestic scientists who have made innovative achievements in conchology research or education.
