Located on the southeast coast of East China's Zhejiang province, Dongtou district in Wenzhou is one of 14 island districts (counties) in China. Covering an area of 2,862 square kilometers, it has 302 islands within its jurisdiction. At the end of 2022, the registered population was 153,600.
In 2015, the former Dongtou county was abolished and Dongtou district was established, signifying that it was now considered an urban area.
Boasting 351 kilometers of coastline, Dongtou is home to two core port areas of Wenzhou Port and has opened shipping lanes to Taiwan, Japan, Russia, and Southeast Asia. The Zhuangyuanao International Cruise Port has is now operating normally.
With an area of over 4,800 sq m, Dongtou is the second largest fishing area in Zhejiang province. It is home to more than 300 kinds of fish and shrimp and over 20 kinds of shellfish. It has been designated "China's Hometown of Clams", "China's Hometown of Hijiki" and "Zhejiang's Hometown of Laver" due to its abundant seafood and marine products.
Adhering to the "Two Mountains" theory, which states that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets, Dongtou has focused on protecting, fixing, and improving its environment in recent years. In 2018, it was selected as a national innovative practice base for the "Two Mountains" theory.
