Construction of the Olympic Sports Center in Ouhai district, Wenzhou came to an end after the project passed its completion acceptance on Sept 20, local media outlets reported.
The project, which started construction on Dec 20, 2019, consists of a 10,000-seat stadium, an 8,000-seat gymnasium, a 500-seat natatorium, and a supporting commercial building in a 15.8-hectare area, with the built-up space reaching 172,000 square meters.
When night falls, the center appears to be a huge dragon floating on the ground, creating a dynamic complementary aspect with the spirit of sports. The design of the center has integrated the color and vigor of Wenzhou's intangible cultural heritage — the dragon dance.
The center's construction has been characterized with a focus on environmental friendliness. From recycling the thermal energy released by the earth's shallow surface, for instance, the pipes installed under the stadium use a ground source heat pump system that can reduce energy usage by roughly 30 to 40 percent annually, and a circulating water purification system has been installed in the natatorium's swimming pool to increase the rate at which water resources are used repeatedly.
The center will officially open to the public by the end of the year, and plans to hold large-scale domestic and foreign sporting events and serve as place to stage culture and entertainment performances, host meetings and exhibitions, and where local residents can exercise.
