The Longwan District Overseas Publicity Base in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province recently organized an activity inviting foreigners from Russia, Pakistan, Mauritius, and Tanzania to try their hands at mirror painting, a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage item.
Introduced by Master Xiang Zhihua, the expats were enchanted by his exquisite craftsmanship, as it not only embodied the profound connotation of Chinese culture, but also showcased the dedication and persistence of the inheritor.
Mirror painting is also dubbed "silver carving" as the lines on the mirror are all colored in silver. It debuted in Shanghai in the early Republic of China (1912-49) period and soon gained widespread popularity for working as beautiful decorative mirrors on wardrobes.
Longwan district will further launch a series of overseas publicity activities, inviting expats to take part in various Chinese cultural immersion activities in which the beauty of the district is interpreted via the perspectives of foreigners.
