The county-level city of Yueqing – administered by Wenzhou, in East China's Zhejiang province – on Oct 15 kicked off with 2021 Yuedu Yueqing Cultural Week, a reading promotion activity that is designed to encourage its locals to spend more time between the covers of a book.

The activity is scheduled to run to Nov 30 and some 20 city reading stations were officially opened at the launch ceremony on Oct 15. The new reading stations are located mostly in downtown Yueqing and in parks, as well as in greenbelt areas – adding about 10,000 square meters of urban public reading space equipped with 230,000 books.

In addition, it's understood the organizers also will hold a raft of activities, such as a famous writers reading sharing salon, a painting and calligraphy exhibition and a video shooting competition.

"Previously, I went to the city library by car to read books. This year, I only had to cross the road when the Qinghe Library opened, which was particularly convenient," said Wu Liwu, a local citizen in Wenzhou.

He added that Qinghe Library has a collection of 60, 000 volumes, carefully classified, so that he can immerse himself in books while being among mountains and lakes.
