Jingning county was founded in 1452, and established the She autonomous county with the approval of the State Council in June 1984. It is the only She autonomous county in the county, as well as the only ethnic autonomous county in East China.

She people are a Chinese ethnic group. A group of She people moved from Fujian to Zhejiang more than 1,250 years ago and settled in Jingning county in Lishui. They produced rich folk arts in daily life, including songs and dances, clothes, languages, customs and medicine, in which the folk songs, wedding customs and the ethnic festival – Sanyuesan (the third day of the third lunar month) have been listed as national intangible cultural heritages.

In 2023, Jingning has achieved a regional GDP of 9.324 billion yuan ($1.30 billion), a year-on-year increase of 4 percent. The per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents were 47,807 yuan and 26,139 yuan, up by 4.9 percent and 8.6 percent respectively.
