The city of Lishui – in East China's Zhejiang province – has donated 20,100 metric tons of forest carbon sinks to the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will take place in the province's capital of Hangzhou from Sept 23 to Oct 8.

Eco-friendly forest carbon sinks refer to forest plants absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and fixing it in vegetation or soil, thus reducing the concentration of the gas in the atmosphere.

Lishui is known for its green development philosophy that values nature and the environment. By donating forestry carbon sinks, the city is known to be supporting the Asian Games' goal of being carbon-neutral and sustainable.

Meng Xiangsheng, an environmental official of the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee, thanked Lishui on June 30 for its contribution at an event held in Longquan, a county-level city administered by Lishui.

Lishui is widely said to be one of the forestry carbon sink pilot cities in China. The city has developed a total area of 69,900 mu (4,660 hectares) for the "Zhejiang Forest Carbon Sink" project – involving eight counties and 14 State-owned forest farms – ranking it first in the province.

The event in Longquan also saw the launch of Lishui's ecological products online trading platform and a fun walk highlighting green and low-carbon goals.
