Xiandu -- literally "capital of immortals" in Chinese -- was named by the Tang Dynasty (618-907) Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712-756) after he lauded it as a gathering place for immortals. The 5.23-square-kilometer scenic area is composed of five scenic spots: Dinghu Peak, Mini Red Cliff, Xiandu Taoist Temple, Niweng Cave and Zhutan Mountain.
Xiandu is a national scenic area. The meandering Lianxi River, together with the riverside scenic belt, offers a charming vista of spectacular peaks and water, a profound integration of culture and landscape, which has earned the area a reputation for being comparable with Guilin in beauty, Huangshan Mountain in eccentricity and Huashan Mountain in steepness.
