The express delivery volume of Yiwu, a county-level city in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, hit 10 billion pieces in the early morning of Oct 30, an 11.2 percent year-on-year increase, as per the State Post Bureau's monitoring data.
The 10 billionth parcel carrying daily essentials is on its way to Shanghai, marking a milestone in Yiwu's booming express delivery sector.
He Hangbin, the head of ZTO Express's Yiwu Xinke branch, which is responsible for the 10 billionth delivery, noted a significant surge in shipments in the runup to the Double Eleven shopping festival, with the number of items skyrocketing to more than 1 million per day and reaching 1.3 million at its peak, said He.
Yiwu now dispatches an average of 33 million parcels worldwide every day. Wang Dongsheng, deputy director of the Market Supervision Division at Yiwu Postal Administration, attributed this growth to the thriving e-commerce industry.
Yiwu, home to 681,900 e-commerce entities, saw a 12 percent year-on-year increase in e-commerce transactions in the first nine months, totaling 371.26 billion yuan (52.11 billion).
The rise in express delivery is also linked to the popularity of Yiwu's small commodities due to events like the Paris Olympics. Efforts like intelligent upgrades to distribution centers and the application of unmanned facilities have further boosted Yiwu's express delivery efficiency by 10 percent, said Wang.
