The Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe dazzled audiences at Madrid's Canal Theater on June 28 and 29, earning standing ovations that lasted several minutes each night.

Despite the ongoing European Football Championship and peak tourist season, the Wuju Opera shows sold out quickly. Yang Changqing, director of the China Cultural Center in Madrid, noted that tickets were nearly gone within a week of going up for sale.

The Canal Theater, one of Madrid's top venues, supported the troupe due to their reputation for high-quality performances. The vibrant scenes at the theater left the venue's manager, Luperto Merino, wishing he had scheduled more performances.

He Yong, Minister Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Spain, highlighted the significance of Wuju Opera in cultural exchanges. He has witnessed the troupe's journey over the past 15 years and believes their performances have been well-received by Spanish audiences. He hopes the troupe will continue to perform in mainstream theaters and festivals abroad.

Since 2013, the Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe has expanded its international presence, performing in countries like Singapore, France, and the UAE. In Madrid, they discussed future collaborations with local companies, including potential performances at Spain's summer arts festival next year. A Canadian promoter has also expressed interest in hosting the troupe in January 2025.

Wang Xiaoping, director of the Zhejiang Wuju Opera Art Research Institute, emphasized the troupe's growing confidence in international markets. They plan to enhance collaborations with local performing arts companies and improve promotional efforts to make Wuju Opera more accessible and appealing to global audiences.
