A Jinhua delegation led by the city's Party Secretary Zhu Chonglie carried out a cultural exchange activity at Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong on June 25.
The two sides signed a letter of intent on how to cooperate in Wong Tai Sin culture and reached a consensus on submitting the culture (including legends and customs) for listing as a world intangible cultural heritage during the meeting.
Zhu highly praised the temple's outstanding achievements in promoting traditional Chinese culture and making contributions to Hong Kong over the past 100 years.
Zhu expressed hope that both sides will leverage their strengths to cooperate in the research and promotion of Wong Tai Sin culture.
Li Yaohui, head of the Wong Tai Sin Temple, said he hoped that Jinhua and Hong Kong will conduct in-depth cooperation to explore the spiritual essence of Wong Tai Sin culture.
Wong Tai Sin, literally "Immortal Wong" in English, is a known immortal of Taoism who lived during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420).
Born in Jinhua in 328, Wong Tai Sin lived as a shepherd boy in his hometown until he was 15 years old, when he was said to be guided by an immortal and at the age of 18 decided to live in seclusion on Chisong Mountain, where he remained devoted to Taoism for the rest of his life.
Folk legend goes that he often helped others after ascending to heaven and becoming immortal, which is why he is highly respected and admired by the common people.
