Authorities of Yiwu, a county-level city in Jinhua, East China's Zhejiang province, staged a shadow puppet play on March 11.
The play, which was performed by two actresses from Shanghai Puppet Theater, was designed to provide opportunities to kids to experience shadow puppetry, an intangible cultural heritage item.
Shadow puppetry has a more than 2,000-year history and is considered the origin of many types of opera.
A group of kids were invited to perform the puppet play and make puppets of heroes in ancient Chinese legendary stories after the play ended.
Zhou Jiawei, a parent of a child participating in the event, said that the activity is useful to help children learn about traditional Chinese culture.
The play is part of a series of cultural activities designed to promote folk art and traditional culture among residents, said a representative of Yiwu Theater.
