Two parks in Jinhua, East China's Zhejiang province, were recently recognized as carbon neutralization forests for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, local media outlets reported.

The Xiangxi section of the Lanjiang Ecological Corridor in Lanxi, a county-level city of Jinhua, is 6.35 kilometers in length. It is made up of four green areas featuring ginkgo, beech, cherry flowers, and weeping willows. The landscape forest and beach forest in the Youbu section of the Qujiang Ecological Corridor covers an area of5.89 hectares and has over 10 tree species such as camphor, beech, and tallow. The two areas, covering 699 mu (46.6 hectares) of area in total, make up the largest carbon neutralization forest for the Games.

Chishan Park is located at the intersection of Huancheng South Road and Dongshi South Street. It is a supporting project of the 19th Asian Games and connects to the Jinhua Satellite Village of Asian Games in the east. It is a comprehensive ecological park covering an area of 465,000 square meters, with 310,000-sq-m of green area.

Afforestation, which absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide, is considered the most economical way to become "carbon neutral". Trees use photosynthesis to take carbon out of the air, form solid carbohydrates, and store it in their bodies in a process known as carbon sequestration. Things with the ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide are known as "carbon sinks."

A carbon neutralization forest is an ecosystem that adsorbs pollutants, conserves soil and water, and greenifies landscapes. Through the optimization of site selection, careful design, overall planning and coordination, a forest can help enlarge the amount of urban greening to realize carbon sequestration, effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and contribute to carbon neutrality for the Asian Games.

The goal of a carbon neutralization forest is to absorb carbon. The amount of carbon the forest absorbs must be calculated and can be used in carbon trade for real benefits.
