A large-scale plastic optical fiber (POF) R&D and production base agreed to set up operations in the Wuyi Economic Development Zone in Jinhua, East China's Zhejiang province during the 2021 International Conference on Plastic Optical Fibers held from Nov 22 to 24.

The project is dedicated to the development of ultra-high-speed POF and related equipment.

It is designed with an annual production capacity of 800 million meters, according to developer Zhejiang Qizhao Holding Co Ltd.

The product will be used in online education, telemedicine, and telecommuting, and is expected to start a new wave of new digital infrastructure construction. It marked the first step in Wuyi county's journey to becoming the center of China's POF industry, said a higher-up at the company.

The conference was co-sponsored by the Jinhua municipal government and the Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang, as part of the 19th Jinhua Industrial Technology Cooperation Fair.

Zhang Xinyu, deputy mayor of Jinhua, said that the city has made its digital economy into the "No 1 Industry" and regards POF as the cornerstone of digital economic development and an important part of digital industrialization.
