A recent breakthrough in biodiversity monitoring unveiled a new species of macro fungi in Haiyan county, Jiaxing, Zhejiang province. Given the scientific name of Marasmius ruforotula, this fungus was unearthed in Fangjiawan, Nanbei Lake, Haiyan county, during October 2023. Rigorous molecular analysis and expert validation solidified its status as a newly recorded species in China.
Marasmius ruforotula is characterized by its small to medium-sized fruiting bodies. These fungi boast smooth or wrinkled cap surfaces with colors ranging from white to deep brown and short, fragile stalks. Found in various habitats such as forests, grasslands, and decaying wood, some species within this genus play vital roles in ecosystem processes, including organic matter decomposition.
Since May 2023, Haiyan county has been actively involved in biodiversity monitoring, establishing a monitoring network in collaboration with the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences and other institutions.
As of March 2024, the county has documented 43 new species of terrestrial higher plants, 25 species of terrestrial vertebrates, 12 species of butterflies, 6 species of fish, and 48 species of macro fungi. Notably, the macro fungi monitoring efforts revealed one new national-level species and 11 new provincial-level species.
Designated as a key pilot area for biodiversity investigation and assessment, Haiyan county has prioritized biodiversity conservation. The establishment of the biodiversity monitoring network promises to provide crucial scientific insights for ecological conservation, resource management, and sustainable development efforts.
