Jiaxing Port recently welcomed its first shipment of 3,500 metric tons of nickel hydroxide from Indonesia, marking the first new energy battery material transport ship to berth at the port in 2024.

In 2023, Jiaxing Port witnessed a surge in activity to facilitate the importation of new energy battery materials. It handled 49 shipments of cobalt-nickel materials worth over 37.2 billion yuan ($5.2 billion), with a total weight of 332,000 tons. This also underscores the port's vital role in becoming a crucial nexus for importing new materials essential for China's burgeoning new energy sector.

China's dominance in new energy vehicles, consumer electronics, and energy storage batteries necessitates a robust supply of materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium. However, with over 90 percent of these resources requiring importation due to domestic scarcity, Jiaxing Port has stepped up to address the challenge.

To overcome raw material shortages, Jiaxing Port has encouraged leading private enterprises to expand overseas operations for resource extraction and processing. Moreover, the port has invested in infrastructure and collaborated with relevant authorities to ensure the safe handling, storage, and transportation of materials like nickel hydroxide.

In recent years, Jiaxing Port has also opened new sea transportation routes and enhanced operational efficiency. Through digitalization and process optimization, the port has significantly reduced turnaround times for cargo ships, enabling quicker unloading and clearance processes.

Looking ahead, Jiaxing Port is poised to further enhance its capabilities. The development of new berths and warehouses will increase its capacity to handle larger vessels and a wider range of materials. This expansion aligns with the city's vision to become a key import hub for new materials, attracting investment and contributing to the growth of China's new energy sector.
