Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province has been ranked second in the province in innovation, according to the recent report released by Zhejiang statistics bureau and science and technology department.

The innovation index of Jiaxing was 196.7 in 2020, 24.7 points higher than the previous year, second only to Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang, while Jiaxing was ranked first in the province in technological innovation.

The innovation index provides detailed metrics about the scientific and technological innovation performance of a city and its 34 indicators explore the scientific and technological investment, technological innovation, sci-tech output, transformation and upgrading, and innovation environment.

According to the report, the number of high-tech companies per 1,000 in Jiaxing was raised from 15.62 in 2019 to 19.02 in 2020, the largest increase in Zhejiang.

In addition, 58.49 percent of the companies in Jiaxing have set up a research department. Meanwhile, the added value of its strategic emerging industries accounted for 15.69 percent of the total GDP, while the fiscal allotment for science and technology took up 11.63 percent of Jiaxing government's recurrent expenditure in 2020, all ranking first in the province.

Statistics show that as of the end of 2020, Jiaxing was home to 2,416 high-tech companies and 6,064 provincial-level small and medium-sized technology-based companies.

The city also had 22 high-tech business incubators and 37 maker spaces at provincial level or above, and established eight high-tech zones at provincial level or above as of the end of last year.
