Tongkun Group is a large joint-stock listed enterprise specializing in the manufacture of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), polyester and polyester fiber. Its predecessor was the Tongxiang county chemical fiber plant which was established in 1982. Tongkun now has total assets worth more than 40 billion yuan ($5.7 billion), 19 holding companies and almost 20,000 employees, and it runs five factories. In May 2011, Tongkun Group was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Tongkun has the capacity to produce and process 6.2 million tons of aggregate filament and 6.8 million tons of polyester filament yarn, as well as 4.2 million tons of PTA annually, ranking first among global enterprises in terms of polyester filament manufacturing capacity and output. Tongkun's products are in great demand both home and abroad, including in South America, Europe and the Middle East.

Over 80 percent of the key manufacturing equipment in the company was introduced from Germany and Japan, and is cutting-edge global technology. By virtue of its nationally recognized laboratory and the platform of a State-level enterprise technology center, Tongkun has been forging ahead in polyester filament production and research and development in China. Many of its scientific research achievements and high-tech products have filled domestic gaps and earned independent intellectual property rights.

Tongkun Group was successively recognized as a national key high-tech technology enterprise, a national civilized unit and a national advanced enterprise in quality management. It ranked 91st among the top 500 Chinese private enterprises, 44th among the top 500 Chinese private manufacturing enterprises, and 42nd among the top 500 Zhejiang enterprises in China.
