A beach-cleaning volunteer activity took place in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on Aug 14, as part of the activities celebrating China's second National Ecology Day, which falls on Aug 15.
More than 200 participants, including environmental volunteers, residents, and maritime industry workers, took part in the cleaning activity at the Jiaojiang Jiangbin Park by the Jiaojiang River.
Divided into eight groups, volunteers picked up all kinds of marine debris along the beach line, such as broken fishing nets, rotten wood boards, and discarded foam, with pick-up tools and large garbage bags.
After a thorough cleanup, a total of 1,030 kilograms of marine waste was collected. Marine plastic waste was sent for treatment under the "Blue Circle" marine waste management model, while other waste was directed to municipal harmless treatment.
In recent years, Taizhou has made significant strides in conserving its environment. Its "Blue Circle" initiative was honored with the United Nations' Champions of the Earth award, while its water and soil management works gained national recognition. These efforts have led to improvements in air quality and ecological environment.
To welcome National Ecology Day, Taizhou plans to host a series of activities, including lectures, study tours, and running events, to further promote environmental awareness and conservation efforts.
