Abiochem (Taizhou) Biotechnology Co Ltd, based in Linhai, a county-level city in Taizhou, was granted the country's first license for the enzymatic conversion-based production of stevioside, a natural sugar substitute, on March 18.

The approval puts the company in a strong position to address the growing demand for sugar alternatives in the domestic market. It is expecting an annual stevioside output value of over 50 million yuan ($6.95 million).

Sugar substitutes have gained widespread traction in the food industry due to their capacity to deliver sweetness with minimal or zero caloric content, presenting an attractive alternative to traditional sugars.

Abiochem's stevioside, derived from the Stevia rebaudiana plant, is an innovative natural sweetener. Through the application of synthetic biological technology, the company has effectively surmounted challenges related to inadequate supply and high production costs associated with stevioside, while also enhancing its flavor profile.

Zhu Guoqiang, a spokesperson for the company, underscored its commitment to leveraging its technological edge to expand both domestic and international markets. "As a pioneering domestic enterprise utilizing the enzymatic conversion method for stevioside production, we aim to support consumers in creating healthier low-sugar products within the beverage and food sectors," Zhu emphasized.
