Two Taizhou shows were featured in a celebration staged in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on March 7 to mark the 200-day countdown to the 19th Asian Games.

Among the two performances brought by artists from Taizhou is Taizhou Luantan, a local opera with a history of nearly 400 years.

Formerly known as Huangyan Luantan, Taizhou Luantan is one of the 318 operas of China. In 2016, it was designated as a national intangible cultural heritage.

The opera is performed in the Taizhou dialect in a tone popular in Central China and is accompanied by instruments such as the flute, suona, gong and drum.

Huangsha lion dance was the other Taizhou performance featured at the event.

Huangsha lion dance, which can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2006.

The most important feature of Huangsha lion dance is the combination of folk martial arts with traditional lion dance.
