The raw materials used to make tangjiu are glutinous rice and early rice, which are generally mixed in the proportion of 4:6, which was passed down from the fishermen's ancestors in Shitang town and is still adopted today. Nowadays, a machine is only used for flour mixing and the rest of the tangjiu making process is conducted by hand.
In Shitang town, tangjiu is regarded as a kind of food, sacrifice, and gift. It is regarded as a return gift when a family's daughters return to celebrate the Spring Festival. Tangjiu is also a good gift for relatives and friends. It is also used when the Spring Festival comes to an end.
Tangjiu is quite popular in Shitang town. Its popularity has spread to people in Ruoheng town and other places that have eaten tangjiu, who will also order it in Shitang town's tangjiu workshop.
