Paper is one of the four great inventions of China, and Kaihua paper from Kaihua, Quzhou, Zhejiang, is one example of Chinese handmade paper.

Kaihua paper was the most valuable paper in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It is white, soft, smooth, and thin but strong.

During the reign of Shunzhi, Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, books printed in the palace and those in the Yangzhou Poetry Bureau were often made of this kind of paper.

In addition, classics such as the Kangxi Dictionary and Si Ku Quan Shu (also known as the Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature) were made of kaihua paper.

In June 2009, Kaihua paper-making technology was included on the third list of provincial intangible cultural heritage items.
