Quzhou to host 1st world Go championship

The 1st Quzhou · Lanke Cup World Go Open Championship hosted by the Chinese Weiqi Association and Quzhou municipal people's government will be held in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, this May, according to a press conference on Feb 22.

The city of Quzhou has been dubbed the birthplace of Go or weiqi culture. The story of woodsman Wang Zhi playing weiqi on Lanke Mountain with immortals was told as early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420).

The Quzhou · Lanke Cup World Go Championship is listed as the top professional Go competition in China, according to the Chinese Weiqi Association.

The champion will be decided in July this year among Go players from all over the world after three stages of competition.

The prize totals 4.08 million yuan ($644,490), including 1.8 million yuan for the champion and 600,000 yuan for the runner-up.
