Li Zhihui, head of quality and technology at Zhejiang Gu Yue Long Shan Shaoxing Wine Co, is finalizing his proposals for the 14th National People's Congress, focusing on the preservation, innovation, and global promotion of yellow rice wine.
"Yellow rice wine is not just a signature product of Shaoxing. It is a cultural treasure of China," Li said. Despite being one of the world's three ancient alcoholic beverages alongside beer and wine, yellow rice wine remains a niche segment in the global market, with its industry value and international presence lagging behind its historical and cultural significance.
Having spent years in scientific research, Li and his team have made notable advancements in brewing techniques. They have refined the fermentation process and introduced digital wine profiling to control biogenic amines and higher alcohols precisely, enhancing the drinking experience.
Li said he believes the industry has significant growth potential but faces challenges, including limited market share and low global awareness. He is calling for greater promotional efforts and leveraging national initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative to expand the international reach of yellow rice wine.
He also proposes that China apply intangible and tangible cultural heritage statuses for yellow rice wine. Additionally, Li suggests stronger policy support for exports, including trade incentives and international partnerships, to help bring yellow rice wine to global dining tables.
