Chuanshan Terminal breaks limits with 11 million TEUs
The Chuanshan Container Terminal of Ningbo Zhoushan Port recently reached a historic milestone by surpassing an annual throughput of 11 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, marking a significant leap in both production capacity and efficiency.
Having surpassed 10 million TEUs every year for the past eight years, Chuanshan Terminal has now broken through previous limitations caused by its saturated coastline. This achievement places the terminal among a select group of Chinese ports capable of handling over 11 million TEUs annually, a testament to its high-quality development and operational excellence despite having fewer berths and a shorter quay.
This milestone signifies more than just a numerical increase - it marks a transformation in both production capacity and efficiency. The terminal's success is driven by significant advancements in several areas, including enhanced efficiency, multimodal transport, technological innovation, and green transformation.
Chuanshan has optimized its site layout, shortened shift changeover times, and improved overall planning, significantly boosting throughput. The self-designed "Fuxi Box", a hatch cover rack, has addressed long-standing space issues, improving operations.
The terminal's railway station, which has been operating for over four years, now offers 19 sea-rail intermodal routes, further expanding its reach to inland provinces and boosting connectivity.
Technologically, Chuanshan has made notable strides, with 30 percent of its operations automated and remote-controlled devices already in use, advancing its goal of becoming a smart port.
On the environmental front, Chuanshan Terminal has embraced green transformation with 55 percent of its equipment now powered by clean energy. With solar, wind, and hydrogen energy technologies already integrated, the terminal is setting new benchmarks in sustainable port development.
