Elderly woman knits winter clothing for community
Sun Peifen, a 71-year-old resident of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has dedicated the past 17 years of her life to knitting sets of wool hats, gloves, and foot covers and distributing them to those in need in the local community.
Sun's journey of giving began during a difficult time in her life. She and her husband once operated a store, but had to sell it due to financial struggles caused by her husband's medical expenses. After losing her only source of income, Sun received support from kind-hearted neighbors, who helped her apply for low-income assistance. Grateful for their support, she vowed to pay it forward in whatever ways she could.
In 2009, Sun picked up knitting, dedicating her free time to making her "warmth sets" for elderly residents, families in need, and widows in the community. She has been doing this every year, crafting nearly 2,000 sets in total, each one taking about three days to complete.
In addition to knitting, Sun is also an active volunteer in the community. She offers haircuts, cleans homes, prepares meals, and provides other forms of assistance to those in need. Despite her modest pension, she saves a portion of it to donate to those who require financial support. Her acts of kindness have left a lasting impact on the community, with many residents expressing their gratitude for her selflessness.
One such resident, surnamed Chen, broke her leg. Sun saw her struggling to return home from the hospital and offered her help. She continued to visit Chen daily during her recovery, providing emotional support and practical assistance.
Despite her advancing age, Sun remains committed to her mission of giving back to society. She feels that she still has much to contribute and is driven by a simple wish to help those around her.
