Wencheng county, Wenzhou, Zhejiang province exported its first batch of mountain waxberries for the year on July 7. A total of 70 boxes weighing a total of 802 kilograms were shipped from Hangzhou International Airport to Madrid, Spain.
Workers at the cooperative in Tonglingshan town carefully sorted and packaged the freshly harvested waxberries before they were exported. Each berry was packed into collision-proof compartments to ensure they arrived in perfect condition.
Zheng Shizhong, head of the cooperative, highlighted the premium quality of the waxberries. Sourced from Baizhangji town at an average altitude of 650 meters, the berries are large, sweet, and uniformly shaped. The largest can weigh up to 65 grams, with an average sugar content of 13 percent.
The cooperative has licenses for processing various agricultural products and has previously exported items like black fungus and dried vegetables.
Wencheng, located in western Wenzhou, has 65,400 mu (4,360 hectares) of waxberry plantations, producing 26,700 metric tons annually. The high-mountain plantations, covering 33,500 mu, primarily grow Dongkui and Biqi varieties, which enter the market later than in other regions, providing a competitive advantage.
To boost the waxberry industry, Wencheng has hosted festivals and promoted products at various venues. They have also developed waxberry wine and juice and expanded international marketing efforts. Soon, Wencheng waxberry cans and wine will also be exported.
