Three Zhejiang-based industrial clusters stand out in national arena
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently published a list of winners for the Contest for Advanced Manufacturing Clusters in China.
Three out of the listed 25 winners were based in East China's Zhejiang province, namely the Hangzhou Digital Security and Protection Industrial Cluster, the Ningbo Magnetic Material Industrial Cluster, and the Wenzhou Yueqing Electrical Industrial Cluster.
Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces were the only provinces to beat Zhejiang, each taking six spots on the list. Shanghai, Shandong, Hunan, and Sichuan each took two spots, while Anhui and Shaanxi each took one.
The contest, launched by the ministry in 2019, is aimed at selecting and sponsoring a number of industrial clusters nationwide to pilot the country's initiative to breed world-class advanced manufacturing clusters and enhance Chinese manufacturers' overall status in the global supply chain.
"The winners of the contest have to possess a large capacity and influence and boast not only nationally leading companies but also have a substantial effect on the regional economy," said an official from the Zhejiang Provincial Department of the Economy and Information Technology, "They also have to be highly distinctive and recognizable."
According to the official, the Hangzhou Digital Security and Protection Industrial Cluster, for instance, contributes 55.5 percent of the total output of the country's security and protection industry. Its key video monitor products account for nearly half the global market.
The Wenzhou Yueqing Electrical Industrial Cluster accounts for 65 percent of the national market with over 6,000 types of products and over 25,000 models. Yueqing, a county-level city administered by Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, is often referred to as "China's Capital of Electronics".
In 2020, 200 Zhejiang-based industrial clusters earned over 10 billion yuan ($1.52 billion), 14 earned over 100 billion yuan, and three earned over 1 trillion yuan, according to Zhejiang authorities at the 2021 High-quality Development Conference for Zhejiang's Manufacturing Industry on March 26.
