The digital economy is increasingly empowering China's ongoing rural revitalization campaign, and East China's Zhejiang province is leading the way.

According to the latest digitization assessment by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the overall digitalization level in rural areas of Zhejiang in 2019 was rated at 68.8 percent, the highest among all Chinese provinces and 32.8 percentage points higher than the national average.

The same assessment was made in 2019, and Zhejiang ranked first that year as well.

This year's assessment also nominated 100 advanced county-level regions based on their digitization initiatives, among which 20 were located in Zhejiang, more than any other province in China.

It is also worth noting that four Zhejiang localities, namely Hangzhou's Lin'an district, the cities of Cixi and Pinghu, and Deqing county, were recently listed among the first pilot zones in the national initiative to digitalize villages.

In 2019, the province's informatization projects in rural areas attracted a total of 24.38 billion yuan ($3.73 billion) in investment, among which 5.33 billion yuan - a 73.1-percent year-on-year increase - were government expenditures and 19.05 billion yuan came from social capital.

At present, 88.6 percent of people in rural areas of Zhejiang have access to the internet, nearly 20 percentage points higher than the national level.

The province's informatization level in agricultural production is 59.5 percent, which is 35.7 percentage points higher than the national level.
