Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province is looking to set an example in beautiful island construction by boosting development on its islands based on the "Two Mountains" theory, local media reported.
For the past 15 years, Zhoushan has been adhering to the theory, which states that "clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver" and focuses on environmental protection and development.
Liuheng Island is focusing on eco-friendly ship repair and is developing a number of industries. There is a saying that in terms of ship repair, China tops the world, Zhoushan tops China and Liuheng tops Zhoushan.
In recent years, Liuheng has been working to develop a world-class eco-friendly shipping industry and a variety of marine ecological recreation options.
The Shengsi Islands are focusing on ecological tourism by establishing camping sites, self-checkout supermarkets, art museums, tea houses and yoga rooms. Shengsi has also become more livable for both local residents and tourists by launching Clean-Up Day and holding events to clean up the beaches.
Xiushan Island is pushing forward eco-friendly development in various fields. It is making efforts to preserve its 40.2 kilometers of coastline and vast stretches of mudflats and has achieved a forest coverage rate of 72 percent.
It has also established the largest tidal power station in the world, built the first high-speed fermentation processor of household waste in Zhoushan, and began the practice of garbage sorting very early on.
