Qianjiangyuan, or the source of the Qiantang River, has a wide range of primary forest. It is home to endangered Elliot's pheasants and tufted deer, both native to China. The tufted deer is a small species of deer characterized by a prominent tuft of black hair on its forehead and fang-like canines in the males.

The national park also has a variety of seed plants. Statistically, there are 2,062 species of high altitude plants, 237 species of birds, 58 species of mammals, 26 species of amphibians, 51 species of reptiles and 1,156 species of insects. Sixty-one of the plants are rare and endangered and 14 are endemic to China.

Qianjiangyuan National Park is one of the pilot areas for the first 10 national parks system and is the only one in Zhejiang province. It includes three protected areas – Gutian Mountain National Reserve, Qianjiangyuan National Forest Park and Qianjiangyuan Provincial Scenic Area, as well as remarkable surrounding ecological areas.
