With the 13th National Student Sports Games approaching in September, the organizing committee held a conference on April 26 to publicize arrangements and preparations.
The games, the first to integrate national college and high school competitors, will take place in the eastern city of Hangzhou from Sept 4 to 16.
A total of 5,774 students will compete in preliminary matches of swimming, athletics, basketball, football, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, gymnastics and martial arts.
World-renowned swimmers such as Sun Yang and Wang Shun, winners of multiple international games, will also battle for the prizes, as professional swimmers and track athletes are allowed to show their talent at this year’s games.
After months of collecting creative ideas from the public, the emblem of the event was officially launched the same day. Inspired by the Chinese character “Zhe” (浙), the emblem used red, pink and blue to bring out a sense of vigor and vitality.
The mascots of a boy and a girl, namely “Qing Qing” and “Chun Chun”, were also published. Representing the Chinese word of “qingchun” (meaning youth) when put together the mascots express the energetic theme of the event.
The games will take place in local gymnasiums and stadiums as 15 universities and seven high schools have offered the use of 25 venues, the majority of which have recently been renovated.
To ensure the games are fair, the event is employing a strict examination system for eligibility and use of any stimulant. A total of 52 students have been deprived of their games accreditation so far.
