Calligraphy and painting
Zhejiang plays an integral part in Chinese painting and calligraphy history.Lanting, in Shaoxing city, Zhejiang province is renowned as the place where Wang Xizhi, a great calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 317-420), created Lantingxu (Orchid Pavilion Prologue), a masterpiece in the history of Chinese calligraphy.
Xiling Seal Society in Hangzhou is a folk art group engaging in seal art as well as calligraphy and painting.
Having first emerged in Zhejiang province and surrounding areas, the bold and unconstrained features of the Zhe School of Landscape Painting was very popular in the mid-Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644). The China Academy of Art has played a significant role in the heritage and development of painting styles of Zhe School.
Jinhua's Pujiang County is hailed as "the home of Chinese painting and calligraphy". Many other regions are also known as "the home of Chinese calligraphy", including Yiwu, Jiaxing's Dongxiang and Pinghu, Shaoxing County (today's Keqiao district in Shaoxing), Hangzhou's Fuyang district, Shaoxing's Zhuji, Ningbo's Yinzhou district and Wenzhou's Longwan district.
